Fall for This Color-Changing Beauty
Kerri Martin
Perennials Trial Coordinator

Happy Spooky Season! My name is Kerri Martin and I am the trials coordinator for Darwin Perennials. When I’m not out hiking or killing my house plants at home, you can find me obsessing over my landscape beds or spending my time walking the summer trials at the Darwin Perennials in West Grove, Pennsylvania. But enough about me, this week my mind has been on all my favorite fall things, crisp air, autumn leaves, and fun fall treats. So, throw on a cozy sweater & grab your favorite fall drink, and get ready to meet a plant that encapsulates all our favorite fall things!

Heuchera Big Top Caramel Apple in the landscape surrounded by other fall flowers.

This week we’re taking a moment to fall in love with Heuchera Big Top Caramel Apple! If you love the color of fall leaves, this heuchera is the perfect treat for your garden! New leaves emerge a beautiful red-burgundy color, perfect for fall, before maturing into that sweet caramel color we all love. If you like to decorate early for fall, feel guilt free with this heat-tolerant perennial that fits right into a summer garden with its delicate flowers, which are also a sweet treat for both bees and hummingbirds.

Having a hardiness of 4a, this frost tolerant plant isn’t frightened of those chilly fall nights nor hungry garden monsters (rabbits and deer). It's the perfect plant, especially for any gardener struggling to find a shade-tolerant plant. But don’t get this heuchera wrong, it can handle full sun in northern climates as well. Big Top Caramel Apple is a great low maintenance addition to your garden!
