Notes from the road: Upgrading Coreopsis Zagreb

Greg Soles
Darwin Product Representative

If you’re familiar with the growth habit of Coreopsis Zagreb, you know it has a tendency to take over gardens! In the photo below you can see how this variety has “creeped” over the course of five years at the Star Roses and Plants trial gardens in West Grove, Pennsylvania. You’ve probably seen the same results in mature gardens elsewhere, too.

These plantings went in the ground in 2011.

Some options offered by Darwin Perennials can offer significant improvements in garden performance. Take a second look at Sylvester and Little Bird. Both are great container items for gallons or quarts.

Coreopsis Sylvester:
• Large flowers – similar in size to Zagreb
• Deep yellow color (just like Zagreb)
• Well behaved – won’t invade

Coreopsis Little Bird:
• Large flowers – again, similar in size and color to Zagreb
• More compact than Sylvester
• Great quart item – reduced royalty to $0.07 to accommodate quarts

Here are both again in this year’s C. Raker & Sons trials in Litchfield, Michigan. Be sure to consider them!
